Don’t Give Up On Your Statin! It May Prevent Gallstones As Well As Heart Disease!

A new study published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that long-term statin use may prevent the need for gallstone surgery. Statins include medicines like Lipitor, Zocor(simvastatin) and Crestor. Most heart disease patients are prescribed a daily statin to lower their risk of heart attack or death from heart disease. Apparently the statins can also prevent progression of gallstones leading to removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). In other words, using a cholesterol lowering drug may lower you risk of having belly surgery in the future for gallstones. Anything that keeps you from surgery and out of the hospital is also an important part of staying healthy!  So if you’re looking for another way to avoid going under the knife, take your statin everyday!
