Relax! It’s Good For Your Heart…

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:14 pm by keepyourhearthealthy

A study in the Netherlands has definitively shown that anxiety is a significant risk factor for heart disease.  People who were diagnosed by a psychiatric professional as having significant anxiety were much more likely to have heart attacks and more likely to die after a heart attack.  According to theheart.org, “anxious people had around a 25% greater risk of CHD and an almost 50% higher risk of cardiac death over a mean follow-up period of 11.2 years.”

This confirms what cardiologists have suspected all along.  It was well-known in the past that Type A personalities tend to have heart disease despite the absence of other risk factors such as family history, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.  These Type A personalities are highly driven, work long hours and experience much anxiety.  This study was the first to definitively prove how strong a risk factor anxiety can be in terms of heart disease.

So, if you want to keep your heart healthy, it looks like you will need to add “relax” to your list of things to do!
